Finally! After years of waiting and empty promises “Food and Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album” is on its way! Yes, I know the title is a bit chauvinistic but this time around, who cares? I can’t wait for this album to drop! Did I mention that it’s going to be a double disk? YAY! Anyway, to pave the way for this sure to be outstanding album Lupe Fiasco has released his first single, “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)”. This track is a bit different from anything that was offered up on his first (and most loved) album but still very Lupe; I love it!
“Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” features a super jazzy beat which gives this track a different vibe and takes a bit of the edge off of the track’s activist based bars. Lupe takes a quick four minutes to tactfully voice his opinions on America’s problems such as “suicide bombers and prosperity gospels” and “emaciated models with cocaine and blood pouring out they nostrils”. Wow! Big words for the rapper turned activist. Either way, rather than going on a tirade as I anticipated, with true finesse Lu skillfully made all of his points without offending. I can’t speak for everyone, but I know I get offended by just about anything and even more so when you talk shit about the country I defend, so the fact that he didn’t piss me off with this track speaks volumes to me. In addition, Lu also found some space in his anti-patriotic PSA to talk about the good in our great nation like the mothers out there raising their babies against the odds. How sweet, 🙂
All in all, I love this track! The beat is unique, snazzy and gives you something to vibe to while his heavy hitting message rattles your brain. The content is nothing short of the excellence I expect from Lupe. It’s raw, clever and delivered with a masterful tact that only true emcess are blessed with. I love it! With that being said, it’s my esteemed pleasure to present to you “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” for your listening pleasure! Enjoy!
